"Book Flix" Spurs Reading

“Book Flix” Spurs Reading

By Amy Quackenbush, Lincoln 3rd Grade

The third grade “Book Flix” is a take home book program based on the    “Netflix” mail order video program. The program is designed to aide parents in choosing books at their child’s reading level. They will read the book with their child and do a comprehension activity that goes along with the book. The child will then be able to test their comprehension by taking an Accelerated Reading Test on the book. Students will be rewarded after 10 punches on their “Book Flix” punch card. A review of the books will be written on each book read and hung on a bulletin board for other students to read.

Third grade is the year where students are moving from “learning to read” to “ reading to learn”.   They are moving from picture books to chapter books.   They continue to practice fluency, but now need to be able to comprehend what they read and apply it.   Parents can help with this process by reading with their child at home.   The “Book Flix” program makes this a fun experience for the families.

This program is innovative in that it takes an all familiar video check out program and has students checking out books to read instead of videos to watch. It shows children that books can be as entertaining and easy to bring into their homes as videos are.

This program will be used in all three Lincoln Elementary third grade classrooms and we would be more than willing to share it with other classes across the district. The original idea for this program came from a break out session at the South Dakota Reading Council Conference held the summer of 2008.   We took the idea and developed a program that would work for us.

We were able to get the program up and running by February 2009. Students have been checking out books very regularly since then. We had a parent information night on February 9, 2009, and the parents were very excited about the program.   They were glad to have a resource such as this to help their child in choosing books for our Accelerated Reader program.

Student comments:

“ Book Flix helps me get my AR points!”

“ It is cool because there are books that I didn’t know about in there, and now I can read them.”

“ It helps us because we have more books to choose from.”

“ It is great because there are 100 books to choose from.”

Comments by other teachers using “Book Flix”:

“The program had a very positive response from the parents      and students. They were excited to be able to choose books together and complete the comprehension activities. For the teachers, it was a refreshing way to help students find that "just right" book.”   -   Julie Denxer, Lincoln Third Grade

“The Book-Flix program has been great for third grade!   The students get so excited about getting a punch after they have read a book and filling up their punch card!   It has been great for parents as well.   They can see the reading level, points and a book review in the Book-Flix Guide that is sent home, and help their child choose appropriate books. It is just another great way to get students involved and excited about reading!!”   -   Renee  Cummings, Lincoln Third Grade
